Donald L. Barnes
Surrounded by family, Donald L. Barnes, 78 of Girard, passed away Friday morning, September 26, 2014 in Girard.
He was born August 12, 1936 in Girard, son of James F. and Neva (Ronk) Barnes. Don was a 1954 graduate of Girard High School where he excelled in football and basketball. He served in the Army at Ft. Leonard Wood and Ft. Chaffee. On February 17, 1957, he married Marilyn A. Daggett at the Methodist Church in Carlinville. Don's occupations included selling MoorMan's Feed and owning and operating, with his son Brett, the Texaco Service Station in Girard. He also repaired small engines, owned a Lawnboy Lawnmower franchise and was an expert heavy equipment operator. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the great grand kids. He loved to fish and was an avid Denver Broncos fan. After retirement, Don enjoyed traveling full time, salmon fishing in Colorado in the summer and wintering in the Southwest. He struggled with Parkinson's and Lewey Body disease but it was a stroke that finally took his life.
Don is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughters, Sheryl, husband Carl, Slightom of Atwater, and Ginger, companion John Lueker, of Hillsboro, and sons, Brett, wife Kristy, of Girard and Bart, wife Gaye, of Gisborne, Australia. Grandchildren are Randi, husband Adam, Riemann, Dusty Rich, Dalton, wife Lauren, Barnes, Dolan Barnes and Tess and Tate Barnes. Great grandchildren are Cole and Drew Riemann and Adley Barnes. Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary W. Barnes. Funeral Information
His remains were cremated and the interment of his ashes will be held at Bethel Ridge Cemetery in a private family service Donations Information
