Obituary of Donald Coy Cook

Donald Coy Cook, 88 of Springfield, formerly of Girard, passed away peacefully Sunday morning September 13, 2015 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield. He was born February 13, 1927 in Nilwood, Illinois to Rudy Coy and Effie Mae (Thaxton) Cook. He graduated from Girard High School with the class of 1944. Don worked on the farm with his father until he went into the military. He served two years in the Army, from 1951 - 1953 and another four years in the Air Force, from 1954 - 1958. Later he worked for Kmart in Springfield, where he retired after 27 years. Don never married or had children of his own but he will be greatly missed by his two nieces, Gloria Gagnon and Carla Goebel, who have been his caregivers for the past five years. The last four years were spent at Springfield Supportive Living where he was surrounded by many wonderful people. Don is survived by his two brothers-in-law, Cecil Allen of Springfield and Carl Bretscher of Chatham, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Eileen Negrete in 1954, Eva Bretscher in 2010, and Wilma Allen in 2015. Don's family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2015 until the time of the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard, with Pastor Ken Lovely officiating.
